Juan Sayago returns to his village after 18 years in prison after being accused of killing horse vendor Raul Trueba. Juan wants to resume a quiet life but he knows that Julian and Pedro, the sons of Raul, have sworn to avenge their father. He goes to see Mariana, a widow whose fiance he was. Everyone advises Juan to leave the city. Mariana and Juan reconnect but Mariana does not want to leave the city with him. It is provoked in duel by Julian, in the desert where Trueba was killed. Juan takes up arms, leaves Mariana and stands ready to defend himself. Pedro the younger will be led to shoot him in the back of several shots with the weapon of his brother.
